NIH Proposes Cap on Grants per Investigator

Home / News

The NIH is seeking public input on a proposed policy capping the number of Research Project Grants an individual can hold as PI or Multi-PI (NOT-OD-26-086), including R01s, U01s, and most major award types. Medical physicists frequently serve as MPIs on collaborative research, and this policy could directly shape how our members participate in NIH-funded science. This is an important opportunity to contribute: NIH wants to hear directly from working scientists, and individual comments, especially from those with firsthand PI or MPI experience, can meaningfully influence the final policy. AAPM  encourages all members with a stake in this issue to weigh in individually. Comments are due August 3, 2026.
