Grants and Fellowships

The AAPM Driving Recruitment through Education and Mentoring Program (DREAM) is a competitive 10-week summer fellowship designed to inspire the next generation of medical physicists by reducing barriers to entry and promoting excellence through hands-on research experience. Fellows are matched with mentors at institutions across the United States and Canada based on their research and career interests, receiving personalized guidance and support as they explore pathways toward graduate study in medical physics.

Selected fellows receive a $6,000 stipend to assist with living expenses for the duration of the program and have the opportunity to attend the AAPM Annual Meeting, with complimentary registration and a travel allowance provided. Fellows are expected to dedicate their full attention to the program and may not participate in summer school, external coursework, or other employment during the 10-week period.

The AAPM Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program is a competitive 10-week summer fellowship that provides undergraduate students with hands-on experience in medical physics through research in a medical physics laboratory and shadowing opportunities at a clinical facility. Fellows are matched with mentors at universities, research facilities, hospitals, or clinical institutions across the United States. and Canada based on their research and career interests.

The AAPM/RSNA Doctoral and Masters Graduate Fellowships, sponsored by the AAPM Education & Research Fund, provide financial support to outstanding students enrolled in or entering CAMPEP-accredited graduate medical physics programs. Four Doctoral fellowships of $10,000 each are awarded annually — two for first-year doctoral students and two for second-year or higher doctoral students — along with three Master's fellowships of $10,000 each, open to all first- and second-year MS students. Awards are paid to the recipient's institution and may be applied toward tuition, professional development, or research expenses.

The AAPM Science Council Associates Mentorship Program (SCAMP) recognizes and cultivates outstanding early-career researchers with the goal of fostering a long-term commitment to the advancement of science within AAPM. Selected Associates are paired with a mentor from the AAPM Science Council or one of its affiliated committees — including the Research, Data Sciences, Therapy Physics, Imaging Physics, and Radiopharmaceutical Committees — and are integrated into the scientific activities of the organization through a structured shadowing experience. Participation may include attending committee meetings, joining Task Groups or Working Groups, and engaging in AAPM activities such as abstract review, Early Career Investigator judging, and committee work at the Annual Meeting.

Six Associates are selected annually and participate in the program through the end of the following calendar year. Each Associate receives up to $2,000 per year for two years to cover travel-related expenses, including flights, hotel, and registration, to attend the AAPM Annual Meeting.

The AAPM International Council Associates Mentorship Program (ICAMP) recognizes and cultivates outstanding early-career medical physicists with the goal of fostering a long-term commitment to global health and education within AAPM. Selected Associates are paired with a mentor from the International Council or one of its affiliated committees — including the Global Research and Scientific Innovation, Global Medical Physics Education and Training, Global Clinical Education and Training, Global Data and Information Exchange, and Global Needs Assessment Committees — and are integrated into the international activities of the organization through a structured mentorship and shadowing experience. Participation includes attending committee meetings, engaging in relevant AAPM International Council activities, and contributing to a specific project developed in coordination with the Associate's mentor.

The AAPM Sexual and Gender Minority Subcommittee Trainee Travel Award celebrates medical physics students and trainees who actively promote a culture of respect, inclusion, and belonging within the field. This award recognizes individuals whose contributions help ensure that sexual and gender diverse communities are welcomed, valued, and represented in medical physics — fostering a profession that is stronger for its diversity.

Recipients receive up to $2,000 to cover travel, lodging, and registration expenses to attend the AAPM Annual Meeting, providing an opportunity to engage with the broader medical physics community and continue advancing the culture of inclusion they champion.

The AAPM Hispanic and Latin-X Medical Physics Trainee Travel Award supports members of the Hispanic and Latin-X communities — as well as those who actively engage in outreach and mentorship to these communities — in advancing their professional development within medical physics. This award recognizes the vital contributions of Hispanic and Latin-X medical physicists and those committed to building a more diverse and inclusive profession, helping to ensure that the field reflects the richness of the communities it serves.

Recipients receive up to $2,000 in reimbursement to cover travel, lodging, and registration expenses to attend either the AAPM or ASTRO Annual Meeting, providing a meaningful opportunity to connect with peers, mentors, and leaders across the medical physics community.
